Now, take a moment and join me for a bit of history… and a brief tour of the French Rivera.
Often known in English as the French Riviera, the Cote d’Azur is the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France, and includes the sovereign state of Monaco.
At the end of the 18th century, it began as a winter health resort for the British upper class – one of the first modern resort areas. With the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, it became the playground and vacation spot for British, Russian and other aristocrats, and the likes of Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, when he was Price of Wales.
Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Edith Wharton, Somerset Maugham, and Aldous Huxley were among many “artists” who frequented this breathtaking coastline in the first half of the 20th century. After World War II, it became a popular tourist destination and convention site. Today, Elton John and Brigitte Bardot have homes in the region along with many other celebrities.
Officially the Cote d’Azur is home to 163 nationalities with about 84,000 foreign residents, but estimates of non-French nationals living here are often much higher.
The French Riviera surrounds the principality of Monaco with a total population of over two million. It also contains the seaside resorts of Cap-d’Ail, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, Cannes, Saint-Raphael, Fréjus, Sainte Maxime and Saint-Tropez.
Nice is its largest city, with a population of approximately 347,000. The city is the center of a communauté urbaine – Nice-Côte d’Azur – bringing together 24 communes and over 500,000 inhabitants, with 933,000 residents in the urban area. Despite its size, Nice is an easy city to explore, with most places of interest focused around the central area.
Èze is famous worldwide for its hilltop view of the sea. Chapelle de la Sainte Croix is the oldest building in the village, dating back to 1306. Members of the lay order of the White Penitents of Èze, in charge of giving assistance to plague victims, held their meetings here. Thanks to its beauty and charm, this small medieval village attracts tourists and honeymooners, drawn to the gorgeous views, many shops, art galleries, hotels and restaurants.
Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is considered the “Presquîle de Rêve” or Peninsula of Dreams, a perfectly preserved 282-hectare headland. No wonder so many rich and famous have villas here! Beaches and paths by the seaside pass luxurious mansions and magnificent gardens. At the beginning of the 20th century, King Léopold II of Belgium owned an estate on Cap-Ferrat and built several houses and an artificial lake. Villa des Cèdres is the main residence today, owned by the founder of Grand Marnier, Marnier-Lapostolle since 1924, and it’s now a private botanical garden called “Les Cèdres.”
Villefranche-sur-Mer is a town and seaside resort, a short distance east of Nice and close to the French border with Italy. On a site occupied since Roman times, ‘modern’ Villefranche was founded by Charles II of Anjou, the Count of Provence in 1925. Soon after, the town fell into the hands of the Dukes of Savoy and had Italian ownership until 1860, when the region was transferred back to France. Built on terraces up a steep hill, the town overlooks the azure blue sea and a beautiful Mediterranean bay below. It’s small enough that exploring is easy and main attractions can be comfortably reached from the center.
Menton is one of the most popular and vibrant destinations on the Riviera, a coastal town and resort with a lovely combination of the sea and port, the old town, and its magnificent gardens and villas. Mountains behind the town protect it from cold northerly weather and bless it with a fine climate even compared to the rest of the Cote d’Azur.
The French Riviera’s unparalleled beauty is sure to captivate you… and the more you learn, the more you’ll want to be right there… and have your own “boots on the ground.”
